We stock two pine straw rolls, and the choice between them is more consequential than it first appears. They are not different grades of the same product — they are aimed at different outcomes.
Long Leaf Rolls — $13.95
Natural longleaf pine straw with no color treatment. Each roll covers about 140 square feet, weighs 29 to 36 lbs and is the equivalent of 2.5 to 3 square bales.
It goes down a warm copper and weathers gradually to a soft brown over the following months. That fade is the main thing to understand about it: natural straw is not trying to hold a color, and on a property under pines and oaks the weathered tone tends to look more at home than a saturated one. It is also the cheaper option per square foot by a considerable margin, which matters across a large area.
Dyed Red Rolls — $24.95
Treated with a natural, plant-safe pigment that holds a vibrant ruby color for up to nine months. Each roll is the equivalent of 2.5 square bales.
The point of the dyed roll is not that it is better straw — it is that it stays looking new for most of a year. Nine months of held color is long enough that a single annual application can carry a property through its whole season, where natural straw might warrant a top-up to keep the beds looking fresh.
How to choose
Pick natural longleaf if you want the traditional look, if the property sits among pines where a natural tone suits the setting, or if you are covering enough ground that the price difference is significant.
Pick dyed red if color retention is the priority: a business frontage, an HOA entrance, a rental property that has to photograph well, or any bed that is constantly on display and where you would rather do one application a year than two.
There is no rule against using both. Dyed red at the entrance where it is seen, natural longleaf through the larger areas behind, is a sensible split on bigger properties and keeps the overall cost down.
Either way, the installation is the same
Whichever roll you choose, it is spread to two to three inches, the twine comes out, straw is kept off bushes, walls and trunks, and the edges are finished with Trench and Tuck or Curling. The material changes the color and the price, not the standard of the work.
